Join John Lewis throughout October as they celebrate Black History Month with a series of engaging and inspiring events and displays that honour Black history, culture, and achievements. Here’s what you can look forward to:
Serendipity Display:
- "Achieving the Past, Reflecting the Future" – A collection of powerful portraits displayed in The Place to Eat.
- "Larry Gains: Heavyweight Champion" – Explore the legacy of this boxing icon in an exhibition located on the second-floor gallery space.
The University of Leicester:
- Black Food Innovators – Posters on the tables in The Place to Eat highlight trailblazing Black entrepreneurs in the food industry.
- Historical Boards in the Window – Dive into the University’s past with displays on its 'Own History Makers,' activism for a multicultural Leicester, and the university’s Black history, linked to the present day.
Special Events:
- Marcus Joseph Live Performance – Saxophonist Marcus Joseph will take to the stage in the ground floor atrium, beginning with jazz before moving through different genres, including spoken word tributes to Black history.
- EAGA Gospel Choir – Feel the spirit with live performances from this renowned choir over the weekends.
- Leicester Libraries Craft Session – Get creative with a craft session celebrating Black history.
- Contrast Steel Band Performance – Enjoy the rhythmic sounds of this talented group.
Beauty Pop-Ups:
Throughout the month, we’ll be hosting beauty pop-ups focusing on makeup, skincare, and haircare tailored to celebrate and enhance Black beauty.
